Tang Qingzeng’s legacy and studies of the history of Chinese economic thought in the 1920s and 1930s
Abstract
The article focuses on the views of economist Tang Qingzeng (1902–1972) who had a significant impact on the economic development of China during the Republican period. Special attention is given to his main work “The History of Chinese economic thought” (1936), a systematic study of economic ideas of pre-Qin period based on up-to-date knowledge of his time. Tang Qingzeng’s methodology and academic standards for studying Chinese economic history are discussed. His assessments of Chinese economic specificity in the context of comparisons between Chinese and Western traditions are analyzed.
