Abstract
The article defines the place of discussion about modernization in Shenbao yuekan (July 1933) in process of formation of views of Chinese public elite on the path of national development. Questions about the obstacles for modernization and the choice between “individualism” and socialism proposed by the journal have stimulated transition from debating cultural issues to the themes of economic development. The significance of debate is highlighted against the backstage of disputes of the 1930s and in relation to the views of contemporary Chinese scholars. Analysis of materials of discussion demonstrates that the majority of participants rejected the idea of free market economy and supported state regulation as main tool of China’s modernization.
