Linguistic and cultural aspect of zagruda genre in Syrian folklore
Abstract
The article “Linguistic and cultural aspect of zagruda genre in Syrian folklore” is devoted to the phenomenon of holiday songs — zagrudas, which are widespread in Syria. The article presents a classification of holiday songs, their structure, and situations in which they are traditionally performed. The article also examines stylistic devices specific to this folk genre and traditional zagruda composition. Zagruda as a festive song is performed on various occasions — birth, circumcision, Hajj and wedding. Wedding zagrudas are more widespread than other types of folk genre. Zagruda is traditionally regarded as one of the genres of folk songs, but there are several features which distinguish it from the song, it is primarily reflected in its melodies. Nowadays a lot of customs have been disappearing from people’s memory. However, zagruda genre persists to our days acquiring new forms.
