On the issue of history of Korean traditional literature periodization
Abstract
The paper deals with the issue of Korean traditional literature periodization. Following the common approach that history of Korean literature periods coincides with periods of Korean history (the approach shared and generally explained by Russian scholars), the author makes an attempt to develop this point of view by analyzing the periodization of Korean literature in relation with its principal specific traits. The following traits are chosen for analysis. 1. The dual-language character of Korean literature using the Korean language as well as in the Korean version of Classical Chinese (hanmun) and therefore represented by two major groups of literature. The hierarchy in these two groups depending on the historical periods is the first aspect traced in the paper. 2. The idea of a text being a sacred tool of positive influence on the Universe, which may be found from the ancient times up to today. In each period of time this function of the text is understood as specifically affecting such factors as spheres of texts dissemination, a place of literature texts in the culture of each period etc. As both traits relate to chronological issues, specifics of each period of Korean literature development are considered through these lenses.
