“Upside-Down World” in “Bokko-chan”, The Book of Stories by Hoshi Shinichi
Abstract
Hoshi Shinichi (1926–1997) is the most famous writer of short fantasy stories in Japan. The article deals with his book of fantasy stories “Bokko-chan” and so-called “illusion”, or “turning upside-down” technique, when reader’s anticipations fail to come up, because characters construct their own world, where fantastic creatures, expected to be evil, are not as evil as man himself, who only shows his real face when meeting them. “Upside-Down World” is not fantastic, but is real world created by men whose nature leads to self-destruction and self-punishment without even realizing that.
