The sociological surveys as a source of materials on popular religion in Republican China (the first half of the 20th century)
Abstract
The paper highlights the sociological, economic and ethnographic research works carried out by the foreign and Chinese scholars that are considered to be an important source of information on popular religion in the rural areas of Republican China. The paper chronologically lists the general data on the early surveys and examines the Western methodology and approaches to the subject under consideration. The paper argues that these surveys contain important factual data which although should not be taken at face value.
