History of the Tibetan linguistic tradition

Abstract

The article describes the origins and development of Tibetan linguistics from the introduction of writing system in Tibet to the 20th century. The article deals with the origin of the Tibetan writing system and important role of the Indian tradition in the establishment of Tibetan language studies. It also describes the period of translating activity in Tibet and the history of the first Tibetan grammatical treatises and their commentaries.
