Xuan Zong and Yang Gui-Fei in Tang literature: choice between personal happiness and ruler’s duty
Abstract
The article reviews three different literary versions of a love story between the Emperor Xuan Zong and his favourite concubine Yang Gui-fei. Trouble resulting from this relationship that threw the whole country into chaos made writers look for a compromise between historical truth and Confucian ritual demands when interpreting the story. A version by the great Tang poet Bai Juyi eventually became the mainstream one, with all subsequent literary interpretations based on it.
