Abstract
The article deals with symbols embodied in rites, rituals and popular beliefs, including rural worship, in everyday Chinese life, as well as patterns of interaction with gods, deities and magic animals. This ritual diversity results from differences in habitats (North versus South), economical activities (farmers versus nomads) and ethnicity, as different ethnic groups have different cultural backgrounds and traditions of totem worship.
