Synthesis of traditional and modern elements in The Great Indian Novel by Sashi Tharoor
Abstract
The article deals with the analysis of the Great Indian Novel by Sashi Tharoor. This novel is based on the plot of the ancient Indian epic poem “The Mahabharata” and at the same time offers an original vision of the historical events taking place in India during the XX century. One of the most relevant questions in the present-day India, the problem of the role which traditional ancient culture should play in the modern Indian society is raised and to some extend becomes the central point of the whole book. The authors of the article step by step consider the structure of the novel (which appears to be really complicated being based on a number of allusions connected with the modern political history of India, historical along with mythological figures and literary stereotypes), system of images and main philosophical categories of the novel (such as dharma, karma, yuga etc.).
