N. Ya. Bichurin and His “Drevnyaya kitayskaya istoriya” (“Ancient Chinese History”)
Abstract
The article is devoted to the famous Russian orientalist of the 19th century N. Ya. Bichurin, Iakinf, who not only made a brilliant clerical career, appointed the Ninth Spiritual Mission in Beijing, but also won a strong scholarly reputation for many works on China, Tibet and Central Asia. Bichurin paid much attention to studies of the political system of China, its geographical position, but also set himself the task of making the Chinese Classics’ translations. One such translation, the incomplete translation of Shu jing made in 1822 and called Ancient Chinese History, is discussed in detail in the article. Refs 26.
