Periodization of the Burmese phonological system. Part I. Initials
Abstract
The paper deals with the periodization of the Burmese phonological system, focusing on the evolution of initials. The analysis proves that the phonological system acquired its present state by the XVIth. century, when the chain of mutually dependent phonological processes completed. As a result, out of the three types of complex initials of Old Burmese only one is being preserved in Modern Burmese. The evolution of simple initials is dealt with as well.
