Shanshu as a Chinese literature genre
Abstract
This paper examines a class of Chinese religious books called “morality books”, or “[quan] shanshu” books, which are widely-spread among common people in China. However some works are characterised by common peculiarities, that are enough to distinguish a prosaic genre of literature — namely, the shanshu genre (we propose to call it), opposing the shanshu class of books. European and Russian literature features a similar genre — the Purgatory genre. The most representative piece of literature of the shanshu genre is “Yuli baochao”, or “Precious Copies of Jade Tablets”, the origin of which dates back to the Song period.
