Abstract
The article aims to reveal the reasons of the political crisis in Thailand at the beginning of the XXI century which are closely connected to the consequences of the ruling of the former prime-minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the coup d’etat against his government in 2006. The main goal of the article is to analyze the preconditions of political instability that had existed in Thailand before prime-minister Thaksin appeared on the political arena and that exacerbated during and aft er his government leading to the military coup and political unrest. The article presents an attempt to reveal the place and role of Thaksin, a rich businessman and a famous populist leader, in the political and economic history of Thailand through the analysis of his relations with the ordinary Thai people, political elites and the royal court. The findings of the article will be included in one of the chapters of the author’s PhD thesis on “The phenomenon of military coups in Thailand within the context of national and regional security at the beginning of the XXI century”.
