Legal status of mothers an d stepmothers in the family hierarchy of imperial China (Tang dynasty)
Abstract
During the reign of the Tang dynasty social status and family position of mothers was extraordinary high in comparison with the pre-Tang period. Th e imperial decree of Empress Wu Ze-tian strengthened the position of mothers. Th e legal status of stepmothers was also higher than in the previous period due to the fact that concubines could not be elevated to the rank of legal wife. Th e article also focuses on Buddhism infl uence upon motherhood.
