Periodization of the Burmese phonological system (Part II: Rhymes)
Abstract
The paper deals with the evolution of rhymes. It claimes that the evolution of vowels took place before the overall merger of fi nals. The merger of fi nals can be traced only by the XVIIth century. It is therefore possible to conclude that the rhymes acquired their present form by this period. At the same time, the chain of new phonological processes is being underway in the Modern Burmese.
