The place of the “Hayat” journal (1926–1929) in the history of the Turkish periodicals

Abstract

The “Hayat” journal (1926–1929) is a periodical covering a range of various cultural, educational, historic, sociological, literary and art, as well as scientific and technical publications. For the first two years all articles were printed in Arabic graphics but starting from November 29, 1928, after changing Arabic graphic for Latin alphabet, all articles were printed in Latin alphabet. The edition of the “Hayat” was supported by the Ministry of National Education of Turkey. The main aim of the journal was to keep people informed with diverse information on significant cultural and political changes carrying out in Turkey after the proclamation of the Republic. Interests concerning the Turkish language, the history of Turkey, Turkish literature were regarded in the journal from the point of view of modern and national identity of the Turkish people. The problem of the development of a new system of national education was considered to be of utmost importance on the journal pages. The first publisher of the journal Mehmet Emin Erisirgil regarded the ideas of pragmatism philosophy, as well as pragmatic “instrumental” pedagogics, which afterwords turned out to be the foundation of a new educational system of Turkey.
