Some places of Islamic pilgrimage in North-Eastern Iran
Abstract
Pilgrimage to sacred places (ziyarat) plays an important role in everyday religious life of Muslims. Different pilgrimage rituals were incorporated to the so called “local Islam”, which is religious syncretism of Islamic and pre-Islamic cults and worships. The presented article deals with the roots of Muslim pilgrimge in Islamic Republic of Iran, describes the current condition of the sacred places in Khorasan (north-eastern Iran), reveals an attitude of Iranian officials and Shia clergy to this phenomenon. This reserch is based both on written sources and field materials collected in Iran in 2010–2012.
