Formula of Isin hymns as the source of the dating of Sumerian narrative compositions
Abstract
History of Assyriology can be divided into two broad ages. Period from 1857 to 1996 was a time of individual card-indexes, gradually developed into printed dictionaries. The situation changed drastically after the 43rd International Congress of Assyriologists held in July 1996, when M. Civil and his group from Chicago and Philadelphia announced the creation of a hypertext database on Sumerian literary texts. Later on, it was decided to cease production of the printed Sumerian dictionary and start with the electronic database that would provide the best opportunities for the analysis of cuneiform texts. The paper deals with dated hymns of Isin dynasty compared to the expressions and words from undated Sumerian literary texts. The use of hypertext links between databases on the Sumerian language led us to conclusion that such texts as ‘Enki and the World Order’, ‘Man and his God’, ‘Nungal Hymn’, ‘The Flood Story’ contain in its structure original formula known only from the Old Babylonian texts. Then, there are many Akkadian loanwords in Sumerian preserved in literary texts in phonetic form of the beginning of the IInd millennium B. C. Examples quoted in the paper show that all the texts mentioned above were compiled at the beginning of Old Babylonian period. Refs 26.
