Towns as the main trade centres under the Abbasid rule (Egypt, Iraq)
Abstract
The author examines Arab medieval towns as the principal centres of trade relations in the Middle East during the Abbasid rule when the economic state of the Caliphate flourished. The very definition of an Arab medieval town which is a topical issue in modern medieval studies is also discussed. The role of markets as important Abbasid social institutions is analyzed.
