Russian translations of contemporary Chinese prose in the post-Soviet period

Abstract

Russian translations of Chinese prose published in Russia between 1992 and 2009 are reviewed; main tendencies and relevant statistics are discussed. In the past eighteen years, 20 books were published containing 163 novels and essays by 74 Chinese writers. The number of copies reached a less than impressive total of 106 000 which is far below the relevant numbers from the 1950s and even the 1980s. Therefore, even more readily available translations of writers such as Wang Meng, Feng Jicai and Jia Pingwa are not widely known to the Russian reading public. Due to a crisis in the Russian publishing industry and a somewhat unappealing image of Chinese literature inherited from the past, opportunities for commercial success of modern Chinese prose in Russia are currently rather limited. However, its cultural potential gives great hopes for the future.
