Abstract

The Yangliuqing New Year picture “Witticism” is analyzed in detail. Pictures of this type first appeared in the town of Yangliuqing in the early 17th century; they are a truly remarkable example of Chinese folk art. The main subject of the Yangliuqing New Year pictures is always closely associated with human desires and unique language of Chinese people.
Witticisms, which are in fact two-part allegorical sayings rich in humour and imagination, belong to folk language. They provide invaluable ethnographic and historical material by depicting people’s lives through language.
