First Japanese diplomatic mission to Russia (1862)
Abstract
The paper briefly describes the arrival and stay of the first Japanese diplomatic mission in St Petersburg. The study was based on the documents from two archives, the Archive of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire (Russian abbreviation AVPRI) and the National Naval Archive (RGAVMF). The diary of Ichikawa Seiryu (Wataru) (1824–?), a member of the vice legate Matsudaira Iwami-no Kami’s suite, was also used. In Japanese studies this diplomatic mission is known as the Bunkyu diplomatic mission to Europe.
