Jamu names of Western Sudan: Denotation and relations
Abstract
The article deals with the jamu names of Western Sudan. It gives a historiographic description of the main approaches and trends in the anthropological and historical researches of the subject. A network of relations of two basic types, equivalence and joking relationship, between more than 100 main jamu names is shown in a form of a graph. Such graph is published for the first time. Further proceeding from the assumption that these two types of relations do not constitute an adequate or complete set of all existing types of relations authors propose a list of “jamu formulae”, that is drawn upon data of a field research, conducted in 2015, and contains figures of speech, used to describe relations between several jamu names.
