Shataka Genre in Telugu Literature of XIII–XVIII
Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem which hasn’t been sufficiently introduced into research area of domestic as well as foreign literary criticism — the problem of formation, development and particular features of Shataka genre in Telugu literature. The genre of “hundred verses” can be found in other Indian literatures, it is Telugu literature where it becomes widely used and acquires certain “canonic” forms. This genre was dramatically influenced by Sanskrit, Prakrit and Tamil literary traditions. First verses in Shataka genre were created as early as XII–XIII c. After long transformation and development this genre is still present in Telugu literature and is very popular in Andhra Pradesh. The article provides translation of certain shataka verses of XIII, XVII and XVIII с. These examples allow the author to analyze stylistic peculiarities of the genre.
