Some characteristics of the songs of Bengali Bauls
Abstract
The article introduces Russian reader into one of outstanding phenomena of the culture of Indian subcontinent — the songs of Bengali folk singers — bauls. Elements of several religious-philosophic teachings and practices are deeply intertwined in the works of these singers. At the same time bauls themselves and there songs made considerable impact upon the literature, folklore and music of Eastern India. In the article there are materials on the origin of the word “baul”, roots of this phenomenon and examples of the songs with elements of their analysis. The article will be of interest for the people studying Indian culture and for the wide readers range.
