Al-Masudi’s Account on Slavic Sanctuaries: Translation and Interpretation of the Text
Abstract
Article of Alexander Matveev is dedicated to one of the most important sources on early of Slavic history — a book of al-Masudi “Murudj az-zahab”. On the basis of analysis of the text of al-Masudi’s account on “Slavic sanctuaries” and its comparison to the archaeological data an attempt to interpret this story as a slightly distorted description of Eastern Slavic sopkas — high burial mounds of Novgorod area.
