Tezkere “Lamazat-i Hulviye-az-Lamazat-i Ulviye” of Mahmud Jamaladdin al-Hulvi, as the main hagiographic work (source) dedicated to the life of sheikhs of Khalwatiya sufi brotherhood
Abstract
The main object of the research is a medieval hagiographic work — tezkere “Lamazat-i Hulviye-az-Lamazat-i Ulviye” by Mahmud Jamaladdin al-Hulvi, a famous sufi and poet (1574–1654). “Lamazat…” is the second important ottoman tezkere after the “Tazkira-yi-Shuara-yi Maulaviya” which describes the sufi sheikhs’ biographies. “Lamazat…” describes biographies of the members of Khalwatiya brotherhood, as well as its numerous branches. Tezkere consists of one preface (mukaddima), 23 parts (lamza — means delicious), every part is subdivided into the subsections (zaika), and a conclusion (hatime). Chronologically the present hagiographical work covers an early phase of Islamic history — from the biography of Prophet Muhammad till the 14th century, and from the beginning of Khalwatiya sufi brotherhood in North Azerbaijan to its blossoming in the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century).
