The Place and Role of Magic in Folk Culture in Tunisia up to the early 1920s
Abstract
The paper is dedicated to the question of what magic’s place was in Tunisian society, and what its role was in forming Tunisian folk culture before the implementation of the grand European reforms in the country. At the end of the research the author concludes that magical thinking determines the whole life of Tunisian society and the vector of its development for many centuries. Its influence was far beyond the sphere of daily routine. It expanded to social, economic and political field. Unfortunately, there are very few studies about popular culture in the modern Tunisia, which is why this work is particularly relevant in this sphere. The scientific literature of the recent years, in the Russian, European and Arabic languages, as well as videos in Tunisian Arabic, was used in the process of writing this article.
