The work of the French catholic missionaries in the context of French geopolitical strategy in Siam in the 17th century
Abstract
This article covers the policy of France towards the Kingdom of Siam (Thailand) in the second half of the 17th century. In the article the author analyses the reasons of France’s interest in Siam during the period in question and pays special attention to religious-ideological basis and practical side of the versatile work of French catholic missionaries (that of the Society of Jesus in particular) being the main factor of the geopolitical strategy adopted by France towards Siam and the guarantee of success of the strategy.
