Typological classification of Chinese conditional sentences
Abstract
Many different approaches to classifying Chinese conditional sentences have been suggested by scholars. It should be pointed out that most were based on the Chinese language itself. They differed greatly from international research and typological theories in terms of the typicality of “ru guo” and “wu lun” conditional sentences, as well as the logical and semantic aspects of conditionals. Based on a traditional Chinese classification and international research, Chinese conditional sentences can be typologically classified into three types: hypothetical, specific, and concessive. Further research tendencies for studying complex Chinese sentences based on typology are suggested.
