Abstract

The article deals with some properties of the languages with noun classes (the Niger-Congo languages) which can be observed in the systems of numerals. As a rule these properties are neglected in grammatical descriptions and do not attract the attention of linguists. Meanwhile, they are worth a thorough analysis as they reveal additional potential of noun class functioning. The article analyzes the choice of a noun class in derived numerals (4 > 8), the choice of a noun class in compound numerals (10 × 2 = 20), the derivation of new numerals by way of noun class changing (2 > 20).
