Verb subcategorization, valence and typology
Abstract
The paper focuses on the interplay of general typological characteristics and valence-determined rules of forming verbal constructions. It is shown, with special reference to Chinese, that, in isolating languages, where verb valence frame largely determines aspectual and other characteristics of the construction the regular rules of lexical selection and combination can be construed as a special kind of grammar.
